PERSONS IN EMPLOYMENT IN CRAFTS AND TRADES AND FREE LANCES, FIRST QUARTER 2026

Since January 2026, data are presented according to the National Classification of Activities – NKD 2025 (NN, No. 47/24), and the information on the application of the new classification is provided in the Notes on Methodology.

In March 2026, as compared to February of the same year, the number of persons in employment in crafts and trades and free lances increased by 1.1% and the number of women by 1.0%.

An increase in the number of persons in employment was recorded in 17 sections, ranging from 0.1% in section J (Publishing, broadcasting, and content production and distribution activities), to 7.6% in section B (Mining and quarrying). A decrease in the number of persons in employment was recorded in 2 activity sections, ranging from 1.1% in section M (Real estate activities) to 2.0% in section E (Water supply; sewerage, waste management and remediation activities). The number of persons employed in section R (Human health and social work activities) remained the same.

The comparison of the number of persons in employment by counties shows an increase in 20 counties, ranging from 0.1% in the County of Karlovac to 2.4% in the County of Šibenik. The number of persons employed in the County of Varaždin remained at the level of February 2006.

NOTES ON METHODOLOGY

Since January 2026, statistical data are observed, processed and presented according to the National Classification of Activities, 2025 version (NKD 2025). The classification entered into force on 1 January 2025 (NN, No. 47/24). Its content and structure are completely harmonised with the Statistical Classification of Economic Activities in the European Union (NACE Rev. 2.1). Its implementation ensures quality international comparability of statistical data.

In order to calculate the indices, the 2025 data were converted from NKD 2007 activities to NKD 2025 activities using the macro method of conversion.

The National Classification of Activities 2025 – NKD 2025 has a different structure compared to the NKD 2007 and a more detailed overview of the differences by sections between the new and the existing classification is described in the document Differences between NKD 2007 and NKD 2025.

Data sources

The data on persons in employment in crafts and trades and free lances are taken over from the records of active insured persons of the Croatian Pension Insurance Institute every month in the year with the situation as on the last day of the month.

These data cover the owners and employees registered with the offices of the Croatian Pension Insurance Institute.

Definitions

Owner of craft or trade or free lance is a person who founded, using his or her own financial resources, a craft or a trade shop or a free lance in which he or she performs an activity, on own behalf and on own account, alone or with employees.

Employee in crafts and trades and free lances is a person who signed a working contract with an employer for either an indefinite or a definite period of time.

Territorial constitution

The data are presented according to NKD 2025 sections and the territorial constitution defined in the Act on the Territories of Counties, Towns and Municipalities in the Republic of Croatia (NN, Nos 86/06, 125/06, 16/07, 95/08, 46/10, 145/10, 37/13, 44/13, 45/13 and 110/15).
