STRUCTURE OF HATCHERIES, 2025

The Report on the Structure of Hatcheries is submitted only for registered hatcheries that generated a production value in the reference year, that is, for those that were engaged in poultry hatching. In the Republic of Croatia in 2025, there were 17 registered hatcheries for hens, cocks and chicks with a total capacity of around 6 036 thousand heads. In addition, three hatcheries for ducks, four hatcheries for turkeys and three hatcheries for geese were registered.

NOTES ON METHODOLOGY

The Croatian Bureau of Statistics conducted the Annual Report on the Structure of Hatcheries (PO-53/S form) pursuant to the Official Statistics Act (NN, Nos 25/20, 155/23 and 124/25 – corr.), Regulation (EU) 2022/2379 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 23 November 2022 on statistics on agricultural input and output, amending Commission Regulation (EC) No 617/2008 and repealing Regulations (EC) No 1165/2008, (EC) No 543/2009 and (EC) No 1185/2009 of the European Parliament and of the Council and Council Directive 96/16/EC (OJ L 315, 7.12.2022, pp. 1 – 29), and Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2023/2745 of 8 December 2023 laying down rules for the application of Regulation (EU) 2022/2379 of the European Parliament and of the Council as regards animal production statistics.

Sources and methods of data collection

Data on the structure of hatcheries are collected by a statistical survey (PO-53/S form) from hatcheries engaged in the production of day-old chicks. This survey enables the collection of data on the total capacity of hatcheries and on the total number of incubated eggs in the reference year, according to the kind of poultry, category and type.

Coverage and comparability

Reporting units included in the annual report on the structure are hatcheries in households, private commercial hatcheries and industrial hatcheries engaged in poultry hatching, which are classified in section A Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing, class 01.47, as well as other entities classified elsewhere but engaged in the said activity. The address book of hatcheries has been taken over from the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries – the Directorate of Veterinary and Food Safety.

Data on hatcheries engaged in hatching of more than one kind of poultry are presented separately for each kind.

Confidentiality

Aggregate data (on the number, capacity and usage of hatcheries for hatching ducks, geese, turkey and certain categories of hatcheries for hens, cocks and chicks) from which individual units can be identified (due to their small number, the dominance rule or secondary confidentiality rule), in accordance with the Official Statistics Act (NN, Nos 25/20, 155/23 and 124/25 – corr.) and the Instruction on the Protection Rules and Methods for the Dissemination of Official Statistics of the Croatian Bureau of Statistics (NN, No. 78/21), are treated as confidential and therefore are not published.

Definitions

Size category denotes a size class of a hatchery in relation to its total capacity expressed in the number of eggs.

Number denotes the total number of hatcheries within a respective size capacity of a hatchery.

Capacity denotes the maximum number of eggs for hatching that may be placed simultaneously in incubators.

Usage denotes an actual exploitability of incubators in a hatchery in relation to the number of eggs set for hatching in a reference year.
