In 2023, water supply reached a total of 57 247 503 thousand m3, in which the share of sections B Mining and quarrying and C Manufacturing was 0.1%, while the share of section D Electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply was 99.9%.
A total of 57 247 503 thousand m3 of water was used in 2023. Out of that volume, 99.2% was used for production, while 0.8% was used for cooling.
In 2023, the total volume of waste water was 19 533 thousand m3. Out of that, a total of 2.7% of waste water was discharged from section B Mining and quarrying, 94.2% from section C Manufacturing and 3.1% from section D Electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply.
In 2023, a total of 12 950 thousand m3 of treated waste water was discharged.
According to the NKD 2007 sections, 2.6% of the total volume of treated waste water was discharged from section B Mining and quarrying, 93.3% from section C Manufacturing and 4.0% from section D Electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply.
Notice
More detailed data will be available on 25 October 2024 in the Database.
The survey is harmonised with the requirements of the joint questionnaire of the OECD and Eurostat – JQ OECD/Eurostat – Inland water questionnaire.

NOTES ON METHODOLOGY
Sources and methods of data collection
Data on the utilisation and protection of waters from pollution are collected by the reporting method on the web form Annual Report on the Utilisation of Waters and Protection of Waters from Pollution in 2023 (VOD-1 form).
Coverage and comparability
Reporting units are all business entities and parts thereof registered in the Statistical Business Register and other administrative sources. The coverage includes all statistical units that used more than 1 000 m3 of water on the basis of available data, which are classified into the NKD 2007 activity sections B Mining and quarrying, C Manufacturing and D Electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply.
The survey provides data on water supply, utilisation of water and discharging of waste water.
Definitions
Water supply includes the total volume of water used by business entities to supply themselves either from own water intake structures or from public water supply system. The volume of water used is determined by a water meter, or otherwise, it is estimated either according to standards for a particular activity or according to the project documentation.
Water utilisation includes the total volume of water used by the reporting units for the production activity in the reference year. This water is used in technological processes (consumed water), in the process of cooling (evaporated water), for sanitary and other purposes.
Discharged waste water includes water which is discharged after utilisation as treated or untreated water.
Water used for cooling, as well as waters used by hydropower plants, are excluded from discharged waste water since they are not considered waste water.
