VOLUME OF ROAD TRAFFIC OF DOMESTIC VEHICLES, 2022

Detailed data on vehicle-kilometres travelled by domestic vehicles on the territory of the Republic of Croatia and on the foreign territory are published here. The data are based on administrative data obtained from the Center for Vehicles of Croatia and the Ministry of the Interior as well as on estimates of the Croatian Bureau of Statistics.

The volume of traffic expressed in vehicle-kilometres is an important indicator of transport performance of road traffic vehicles. Vehicle-kilometres travelled is an indicator of the environmental impact of the transport activity and one of the important indicators of the traffic safety.

In 2022, vehicles registered in the Republic of Croatia travelled 29 912 million vehicle-kilometres, which was 6.1% more than in 2021.

Out the total number of vehicle-kilometres travelled in 2022, passenger cars accounted for 78.2%. The largest share in vehicle-kilometres travelled by passenger cars was generated by diesel-driven passenger cars, 64.7%.

Due to a continuous increase in the number of registered hybrid passenger cars, vehicle-kilometres travelled in this vehicle category in 2022, compared to 2021, showed the biggest growth. The vehicle-kilometres of hybrid diesel passenger cars increased by 109.0% and those of hybrid petrol passenger cars by 45.0%, as compared to 2021. The vehicle-kilometres of pure electric passenger cars increased by 78.1% compared to 2021.

NOTES ON METHODOLOGY

It may happen that the sum total does not equal the sum of individual figures, i.e. that cumulative data do not always equal the sum of individual results due to the rounding of numbers.

The estimate of vehicle-kilometres travelled by national vehicles was obtained on the basis of data on kilometres travelled by vehicles that had taken a vehicle inspection test and the number of registered vehicles in the Republic of Croatia. Data on kilometres travelled were obtained on the basis of odometer readings during regular vehicle inspections by the Center for Vehicles of Croatia in the period of three consecutive years for all motor vehicles which had to take vehicle inspection tests. Kilometres travelled by each individual vehicle are calculated on the basis of the difference in the odometer readings obtained during the last two vehicle inspections. Kilometres travelled by new vehicles, for which such data do not exist, are estimated using the imputation method.

Data on average number of registered vehicles in the Republic of Croatia were obtained on the basis of the number of road motor vehicles registered with the Ministry of the Interior during two consecutive years.

Definitions

Vehicle-kilometre is a unit of measure representing the movement of a road motor vehicle over one kilometre. The distance to be observed is the distance actually travelled. It includes movements of empty road motor vehicles. Units made up of a tractor and a semi-trailer or a lorry and a trailer are counted as one vehicle.

Road vehicle is a vehicle running on wheels and intended for use on roads.

Road motor vehicle is a road vehicle fitted with an engine whence it derives its sole means of propulsion, which is normally used for carrying persons or goods or for hauling, on the road, vehicles used for the carriage of persons or goods. The statistics exclude motor vehicles running on rails.

According to Annex I of the Ordinance on the Conformity Assessment of Motor Vehicles and Their Trailers, motor vehicle categories are as follows: M1 (passenger cars), M2 and M3 (buses and coaches), N1, N2 and N3 (goods vehicles), L1, L2 and L6 (mopeds), L3, L4, L5 and L7 (motorcycles), and T5 (tractors on wheels).

Petrol vehicle is a road motor vehicle using petrol for propulsion containing up to 10% bioethanol.

Diesel vehicle is a road motor vehicle using diesel for propulsion containing up to 7% biodiesel.

Hybrid petrol vehicle is a road motor vehicle using petrol for propulsion, with in addition one or more electric motors for propulsion, where the electric motor(s) are powered from a traction battery which is charged by a generator driven by the petrol engine. Plug-in hybrid petrol vehicles where the traction battery can also be charged from an external electricity source (such as an electric socket) are included as well.

Hybrid diesel vehicle is a road motor vehicle using diesel for propulsion, with in addition one or more electric motors for propulsion, where the electric motor(s) are powered from a traction battery which is charged by a generator driven by the diesel engine. Plug-in hybrid diesel vehicles where the traction battery can also be charged from an external electricity source (such as an electric socket). Hybrid diesel-electric vehicles are included as well.

Pure electric vehicle is a road motor vehicle using batteries to feed an electric motor for propulsion.

National vehicle is a road motor vehicle registered in the Republic of Croatia and bearing registration marks of the Republic of Croatia.
