AGRICULTURAL QUARTERLY PRICE INDICES, FIRST QUARTER OF 2023

Since 2018, agricultural quarterly price indices have been calculated on the basis of 2015 in accordance with Eurostat recommendations.

In the first quarter of 2023, the average producer prices of agricultural goods output increased by 48.8% compared to 2015 and by 23.2% compared to the same quarter of 2022.

The prices of crop products output were by 46.7% higher compared to 2015 and by 8.6% higher compared to the same quarter of 2022.

Compared to the same period of the previous year, the prices increased in all significant groups of crop products output. The increase in the prices of crop products output was mostly affected by the increase in the prices of vegetables (by 16.0%), wine (by 5.4%), and fruits (by 29.8%), while the prices in the cereals group decreased (by 1.9%).

The prices of livestock, poultry, and animal products output increased by 50.4% compared to 2015 and by 37.0% compared to the same quarter of 2022.

As regards the groups of products that have the largest share in livestock production, the largest increase compared to the same quarter of 2022 was recorded in the prices of milk (by 39.1%), pigs (by 60.7%), cattle (by 16.1%), poultry (by 28.9%), and consumer eggs (by 74.9%).

The prices of goods and services currently consumed in agriculture (input I) increased by 51.8% in the first quarter of 2023 compared to 2015 and by 4.5% compared to the same quarter of 2022. This increase was mostly influenced by the increase in the prices of animal feedingstuffs, energy, and seeds and seedlings.

NOTES ON METHODOLOGY

Sources and methods of data collection

The agricultural price indices for the Republic of Croatia have been calculated on the basis of the data on prices obtained through the quarterly surveys on the purchase and sale of agricultural products as well as through other surveys carried out by the Croatian Bureau of Statistics, from administrative data of the Ministry of Agriculture and from other administrative sources.

The price indices in agriculture in the Republic of Croatia have been calculated on the 2005 basis within the national Phare 2005 Programme for the first time and the methodology used has been harmonised according to Eurostat recommendations.

Since 2018, the indices have been calculated on the 2015 basis.

The structure of weights is reviewed every five years according to the Eurostat methodology for agricultural price statistics, which means that the calculation of price indices is influenced by the weight structure from the base year. The Laspeyres formula is used to calculate the price indices.

The weight structure was calculated on the basis of the share of individual products in the purchase and sale of agricultural products as well as on the basis of the value of agricultural production and intermediate consumption from the agricultural economic accounts.

Coverage

The agricultural price indices are calculated at the level of the Republic of Croatia.
