In group Hotels and similar accommodation, 35.3% of accommodation establishments were equipped with accommodation units for persons with disabilities and limited mobility
Out of 1 043 accommodation establishments in the Republic of Croatia classified in group Hotels and similar accommodation, in which tourist nights were realised in 2021, there were 368 accommodation establishments (35.3%) equipped with accommodation units (rooms and suites) for persons with disabilities and limited mobility.
In 2021, there was a total of 1 795 accommodation units available in group Hotels and similar accommodation (1 534 rooms and 261 suites) for persons with disabilities and limited mobility.
Hotels had the largest number of rooms and suites for persons with disabilities and limited mobility
In the structure of accommodation establishments in group Hotels and similar accommodation equipped with accommodation units (rooms and suites) for persons with disabilities and limited mobility, the highest number of accommodation units were recorded in hotels (82.3%). Other establishments in group Hotels and similar accommodation accounted for 17.7% of accommodation units.
The largest number of accommodation units for persons with disabilities and limited mobility recorded in the County of Primorje-Gorski kotar
The largest number of accommodation units in group Hotels and similar accommodation for persons with disabilities and limited mobility was recorded in the following counties: Primorje-Gorski kotar (22.1%), Split-Dalmatia (18.2%), Istria (13.9%), Dubrovnik-Neretva (9.2%), the City of Zagreb (6.8%), and Osijek-Baranja (6.7%), which was 76.9% in total. The remaining 23.1% of accommodation units for persons with disabilities and limited mobility was recorded in other counties.

The purpose of the statistical survey
The purpose of this statistical survey is to monitor the number of accommodation establishments in group Hotels and similar accommodation (group 55.1 of the NKD 2007.) equipped with one or several accommodation units (rooms and suites) for persons with disabilities and limited mobility and to produce internationally comparable data in line with European standards for tourism statistics.
Legal basis
The survey is implemented on the basis of the Official Statistics Act (NN, No. 25/20) and the Regulation No. 692/2011 of the European Parliament and of the Council concerning European statistics on tourism.
Observation units
Observation units are legal entities and parts thereof classified in group 55.1 Hotels and similar accommodation according to the NKD 2007. that are equipped with accommodation units (rooms and suites) for persons with disabilities and limited mobility.
Sources and methods of data collection
Data on the number of accommodation establishments in group 55.1 Hotels and similar accommodation according to the NKD 2007. that are equipped with one or more accommodation units (rooms and suites) for persons with disabilities and limited mobility are collected on the annual Report on Accessibility of Tourist Accommodation Establishments to Persons with Limited Mobility (TU-11i form).
Coverage and comparability
This statistical survey covers accommodation establishments that are categorised in the group Hotels pursuant to the Hotel and Restaurant Activity Act (NN, Nos 85/15, 121/16, 99/18, 25/19, 98/19, 32/20, 42/20 and 126/21). The Minister of Tourism prescribes the types of accommodation establishments within these groups in an ordinance.
According to the Ordinance on Classification, Categorisation and Special Standards of Accommodation Establishments in the group Hotels (NN, Nos 56/16 and 120/19), the types of accommodation establishments are the following: hotels, heritage hotels, all-suite hotels, integral hotels, diffuse hotels, special-standard hotels, spa-type accommodation, tourist resorts, tourist apartments, boarding houses and guest houses.
The Building Act (NN, No. 153/13) regulates the accessibility of buildings to persons with disabilities, while the Ordinance on Ensuring Access to the Disabled and to Persons with Reduced Mobility (NN, No. 78/13) defines obligations related to construction of new buildings as well as obligations related to the adaptation of existing buildings during reconstruction.
Definitions
Person with limited mobility is a person with temporary or permanent mobility limitations due to disability, age, pregnancy or other causes.
Person with disability is a person with permanent or temporary bodily, mental, intellectual and/or sensory difficulties, which, through an interplay with various spatial obstacles, might prevent that person from performing his/her role in society on an equal basis.
Accessibility is the result of the application of technical solutions in construction projects and in construction of buildings through which persons with disabilities and limited mobility are provided with unlimited access, movement, staying and working in those buildings, to equal extent as everyone else.
Accessible building is a building, a part of a building or equipment which enables the fulfilment of accessibility elements.
