In 2020, water supply reached a total of 46 661 949 thousand m3, in which the share of sections B Mining and quarrying, C Manufacturing and E Water supply; sewerage, waste management and remediation activities was 0.1%, while the share of section D Electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply was 99.9%.
By the origin of water used, water from reservoirs accounted for 92.8%, water from watercourses 6.6%, while the remaining 0.6% referred to the water from public supply, other systems, underground waters, springs, lakes and sea.
A total of 46 841 994 thousand m3 of water was used in 2020. Out of that volume, 99.1% was used for production, while 0.7% was used for cooling.
Out of the total volume of water used for production (46 434 906 thousand m3), 0.01% was spent in the production process itself, while 23.7% (320 832 thousand m3) of the total volume of water used for cooling was spent during the cooling process.
In 2020, a total of 56 918 thousand m3 of waste water was discharged. Out of that volume, 23.8% was discharged into the public sewage, 20.4% into watercourses, 54.3% into the sea and the remaining 1.5% was discharged into the ground, lakes and reservoirs.
A total of 3.7% of waste water was discharged from section B Mining and quarrying, 94.4% from section C Manufacturing, 1.4% from section D Electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply and 0.4% from section E Water supply; sewerage, waste management and remediation activities.
In 2020, a total of 15 323 thousand m3 of treated wastewater was discharged. Out of that volume, 51.1% was discharged into the public sewage, 0.4% into the ground, 23.8% into watercourses and 24.7% into the sea.
According to the NKD 2007. sections, 2.7% of the total volume of treated waste water was discharged from section B Mining and quarrying, 92.0% from section C Manufacturing, 5.2% from section D Electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply and 0.2% from section E Water supply; sewerage, waste management and remediation activities.

Sources and methods of data collection
Data on the utilisation and protection of waters from pollution are collected by the reporting on the web form Annual Report on the Utilisation of Waters and Protection of Waters from Pollution in 2020 (VOD-1 form).
Coverage and comparability
Reporting units are all business entities and parts thereof registered in the Statistical Business Register and other administrative sources. The coverage includes all statistical units that used more than 1 000 m3 water on the basis of available data, which are classified into the NKD 2007. activity sections B Mining and quarrying, C Manufacturing, D Electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply and E Water supply; sewerage, waste management and remediation activities.
The survey provides data on water supply, utilisation of water, discharging of water and amounts of treated waste water according to the NKD 2007. activities.
Definitions
Water supply includes the total volume of water used in supplying business entities, irrespective of whether it was used for own purposes or sold to other users. The volume of water used is determined by a water meter, or otherwise, it is estimated either according to standards for a particular activity or according to the project documentation. Data on water used are given according to the origin of water: from the public supply system, other systems, underground waters, springs, watercourses, lakes, reservoirs and the sea.
Water utilisation includes the total volume of water used by reporting units for the production activity in the reference year. It includes the volume of water used in technological processes (consumed water), in the process of cooling (evaporated water), in the production of electric energy, for sanitary and other purposes.
Discharge of water includes the total volume of discharged waste water according to the place of discharging into a recipient.
Treated waste water includes the total volume of discharged treated waste water according to the place of discharging into a recipient.
